Emergency food, warm clothing, and small transitional shelters when floods, cyclones, or extreme cold hit the communities we serve.
Floods, cyclones, and extreme cold are a regular part of life in the delta. We cannot predict when they will come, so we train staff to respond in their own localities with the resources we have, working with local authorities and other organisations.
When families lose their food supply, we aim to provide emergency food so they can get through until the situation improves. In a typical year this might reach up to 400 families — around 2,000 people — in Dhaka, Bogura, Gaibandha, and Rangpur.
Because we work in the north-west, we also keep ready to distribute blankets and warm clothes during severe cold, centred on the children and families of our village schools.
After a major disaster, once immediate needs are met, we can provide small transitional houses of bamboo and tin for families who have lost their homes. If resources allow, up to 40 such shelters per location — around 800 people — give a safe place to stay while they recover.
