Desktop computer skills — from basic office work to photo-editing, web design, and an introduction to AI — for young people with little access to computers.
Smartphones are widespread in Bangladesh; desktop and laptop computers are not. Only 2.7% of rural students can carry out a basic copy-and-paste operation. Our centres give each student a computer and a path into ICT-based work or self-employment.
Centres in Rangpur and Bogura continue. The former Sirajganj centre moves to Gaibandha. A new centre opens in Geneva Camp, Mohammadpur, Dhaka. Courses last three months, two hours a day, two sessions a day.
Students learn Windows, Microsoft Office, intensive Bangla and English word-processing, spreadsheets, email, and safe web browsing. Instructors are also trained to teach photo-editing, website building, and an introduction to AI. Affordable fees are set according to students' means, to keep commitment high. Evaluation is by practical exam at the end of each course.
We also run occasional residential courses for people outside our centre locations and to train new instructors. Fifteen minutes of each class is given to English, which is often needed for internet-based work. All students join our social awareness seminars.
